On tap at the Sager/Stoneyard Pub in Rochester, NY.
This one pours a dark-ish golden amber color, with a small head, and not much lacing.
This smells quite hoppy, it’s seemingly American barleywine all the way, with some prickly and spicy booziness as well.
This is really not good, unfortunately. Stoneyard used to be a favorite local brewery, and they made some really good beers, but I’m continually disappointed when I keep trying their in the last few years. This has a very stale, weird taste to it – boozy, almost like burnt leaves, with a distinctly spicy and overhopped character to it. There’s very little barrel character here outside of brash booziness.
This is not drinkable, thin and astringent and just not a pleasant drinking experience.
Stoneyard used to be so much – it’s been hard to watch their slow and lumbering fall from grace.
