A lovely gift from a friend - canned on 6/26, enjoyed on 8/1 - poured from a tall-boy into my Portsmouth tulip.
Opaque seal brown liquid with an active tan cap, receding swiftly to a faint burbling collar; below-average retention, but prominent sheets of angels tears.
Malty aroma with faint raisin, toffee, and toast. No char, tobacco, etc. Clean, robust, with some mild fusels given the ABV.
A malt-head's delight on the palate, with a dense chewy wave of barley - grainy but not husky. Baker's chocolate, faint coffee, and a touch of caramel as the ale warms. Medium-dry, earthy finish with a hint of cherry pits. Low bitterness with clean, faintly herbal (English?) hops. High gravity, but not too sweet or tannic. Clean and powerful.
As warm as you might expect from the ABV, a little thin perhaps, with just sufficient carbonation.
Delicious and unique - not easy to find a stout this big that isn't barrel aged or loaded with adjuncts/extra flavors.
