@ Haw River
Lagered for six weeks in a Chardonnay barrel.
Appears deep red beneath a compact creamy head. Interesting aromas of toast, soap, strawberries, toffee, and wine barrel. Flavor is nutty, toasty brown bread, yeast, berries, pears, and caramel sweetness. Medium-light bodied, surprisingly light and drinkable for over 8%. Smooth and dry. Not my favorite, admittedly in large part because I’m particularly hard to please when mixing caramel malts and Belgian yeast. I think if the yeast had more subtlety and/or they went for more of a lighter colored version, I’d like it better. Pretty much to style though.
