A big, rich cream stout, brewed with lactose, flaked oats, and fresh, organic pumpkin from our friends at Eastern Carolina Organics. We finish Javalantern with a touch of the traditional blend of locally-grown baby ginger, sweet cinnamon, allspice & blade mace, as well as a beautiful Kenyan Peaberry coffee bean from our friends at Muddy Dog Roasting in Morrisville, which helps bring everything back around with a rich, bright, sweet spice-forward aroma and finish.

Thick, black beer on the pour. A small light brown head appears and lasts only a minute. A few specks of lacing left behind. Smells like coffee with sweet cream and pumpkin spices. The taste is sweet coffee, milk sugar a bit of pumpkin and a lot of cinnamon. If I had one complaint about this beer it would be to tone down the cinnamon a little. Other than that this is a really great beer.

16 ounce can, no date seen. Pours black with a longer lasting tan head. Not much in the lacing departments.
The nose is coffee, roast and some spicy cinnamon.
Chocolate, coffee, chalkiness, char or ash and vanilla. The spice characters are cinnamon mostly, maybe some nutmeg too.
Starts out creamy, but has a thinner body with a drying finish.
Not bad for a pumpkin/spice beer. And certainly better when carving pumpkins for Halloween.

Pours dark brown. Foamy, medium tan head that Fades slowly.
Smells coffee, light roast, light Carmel and a hint of spice.
Taste coffee, roast malt, caramel and slightly increasing cinnamon as it warms up. Not very sweet. Finish is dry with a Char linger and light spice. Medium body and fizzy lower carbonation.

Appearance - Pours jet black with thin mocha colored head that dissipates to a thin ring.
Aroma - Sweet like a cookie, nutmeg, cinnamon, fresh brewed coffee. It kind of reminds me of a cold pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks. Nice creamy lactose aroma as well
Taste - The roasted coffee and bit of smoke comes through up front, sweet chocolate and cinnamon it almost tastes like a dessert beer. I have to say all of the flavors come out well and work very well together.
Feel - Medium bodied, soft creamy feel smooth just right for the style.
Overall - Not much I would change here great balanced flavors, smooth and wonderful aroma.

Appearance: Arrives fudge brown capped by a finger or two of beige head; a modest amount of lacing hangs around the glass
Smell: Cinnamon and nutmeg complement the lactose and chocolate stout aromatics
Taste: The cinnamon bursts onto the palate with the nutmeg and other pie spices building around the chocolate and lactose flavors; into the middle, the chocolate emerges more forcefully as does the coffee; the finish is nicely balanced
Mouthfeel: Medium to full body; somewhat creamy, with moderate carbonation
Overall: A very nice beer from Haw River here; shows that they can brew an English style quite nicely, with a twist that makes it very interesting

@ Haw River
Dark ruby-tinted black under a small creamy head. Typical pumpkin spices in the aroma blend with lightly sweetened coffee and some berry-like fruits. Warm fall spices don’t overwhelm the flavor at all thanks to a sufficient toasty malt sweetness, dark cocoa finish, and increased creamy coffee to help balance. Medium bodied and smooth. A well-constructed spiced beer – definitely a noticeable improvement over the similarly named Porter from last season.
