Hmmm. This is a 2017 bottle that I was told was 2018 when myself & another gentleman were talking about it. At least he got the 22 oz. bottle size right. Split with my wife.

The pour is black & the years seem to have sucked away any potential head. The nose is smooth. Smooth whiskey, smooth rye, smooth roast. Smooth.

Wednesday (2017). The nose lures you in gently & the first taste is an unexpected punch in the forehead. Even after three plus years the whiskey is active & harsh on the palate, belying the quieting of the aroma. The beer underneath seems to have faded some, perhaps just in relation to the whiskey: rye is evident but faint, chonk of roast, dry, light spicing, wood. No thinning despite the age; half a bomber will do just fine, thanks.

Drinking this faster than I should because it’s nearly my birthday & you know what that means. Perhaps it isn’t fair to review at this age as it doesn’t bear much semblance to the reviews of fresher bottles. Still a pretty good beer.

Got this one from desp59 a while back. Cheers, man!

From a bomber into a snifter
Imperial stout aged in aged in whisky barrels – WF Rye

APPEARANCE: Black pour yields a three finger, medium looking, creamy, dark tan head with great retention. Black body with no carbonation evident. Head slowly recedes to a full creamy cap and leaves drapes of lacing on the glass. Faint wisp and ring remain leaving touches of lacing down the glass. Good looking stout.

SMELL: Whisky and plenty of oak, with vanilla, butterscotch and toffee, sweet cream and a touch of milk chocolate. Plenty of alcohol as well. Bold for sure.

TASTE: Whisky, milk chocolate, sweet vanilla and oak up front, with a good dose of alcohol at the swallow. Bold and very pronounced finish of rye, whisky, wood, sweet vanilla, butterscotch and milk chocolate linger on the palate. Plenty boozy as well with a strong spirit presence.

PALATE: Medium-fuller body with medium carbonation. A touch prickly on the palate, slick enough, goes down fine with a bit of a scratch and burn, finishing mouth-coating. Some heat lingers.

OVERALL: A solid barrel aged imperial stout and definitely another quality offering from Cycle. This one is on the boozier and woodier side of the spectrum compared to the rest of their army of imperial stouts, while the lack of an adjunct is a change of pace as well. Definitely an enjoyable batch but not as unique as a lot of their other offerings. Thanks again, desp! These guys are always great.

big thanks to gregh for always hooking up the cycle. here's hoping that the coming hurricane is nothing.

brew is much like the other recent cycle...thick and rich. still not quite at those old school levels of intensity but getting close and close each run of bottles. deep and decadent with plenty of booze...almost too much but I love it. could use a little something else as this is a bit of a chore to take down a full bottle, but hey, life is full of difficulties so who am I to complain?

650 mL bottle. Black inky body. Smells of rye. Like rye all over. Whiskey. Chocolate. Booze. Tastes of rye all over too. Rye whiskey. Dark bitter chocolate. Spicy rye. Booze in the back end. Very boozy and intense. Flavorful, but it is really intense.

Bomber into a snifter appesrs black in color with a dark brown head that retains well.

It smells roasty and earthen with slight citrus blending to chocolate.

The taste is very earthen almost dirty with booze, espresso and neutral oak. A little bit acrid with a fruity whiskey aftertaste lingering.

This is medium in body with modest carbonation. A little weird but enjoyable.

Sample at Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen 2017, green session. Aroma is spicy with fudge and dark fruit notes. Taste has chocolate covered berries, a bit tart and astringent, dry on the finish.

Stark black with a fuzzy mocha head that settles to a thin ring.

I'm getting rye and cola on the nose but thankfully the palate becomes much more decadent and complex with a smooth, thick body, a little hot though, featuring roasted nut, chocolate, and a touch of rye spice.
