Dark brown pour that appears black and opaque in the glass; very thin head, tan and dense texture, long-lasting. Outstanding nose; dark chocolate and roasted grain notes; a vague note of oak; restrained whiskey character. Incredible presence of rich milk chocolate and cocoa; subliminal undercurrent of bourbon; tobacco juice; an indeterminate sort of mild spiciness. Immensely dense and viscous body; smooth with a residual sugar stickiness clinging to the palate; a smidge of alcohol warmth.

This is another incredible offering from Cycle Brewing. Per email correspondence with Cycle's Doug Dozark (wish I still had his private email address that he graciously gave me), they don't give out an ABV because it takes very expensive machinery to truly calculate a barrel aged beer's actual ABV. I'd guess this to be in the 11-13% range. But the real beauty of this beer is the base beer remains the highlight. The bourbon is there, but it is so well integrated into the total package that it really is, taste-wise, secondary to the base beer. I love a barrel aged product that does this.

Poured at 57°. Black with ruby edges body; dark brown mixed bubbles head with a fairly quick cap that leaves a small island of micro dots, a solid ring and bands of soapy bubbles/clingy lace upon agitation; heavy legs sheet the glass. Nose is chocolate with bourbon right behind; oaky vanilla as beer warms. Sweetish bourbon upon entry, followed by oak, caramel and old leather; sweet chocolate at a touch of char; oaky vanilla middle; baker’s bittersweet chocolate and whiskey aftertaste. Heavy minus body (not at all adjuncty); light carbonation; some warmth in mouth from 13% abv; dry oak barrel tongue coating. Overall, a perfect marriage of barrel and base; earthy leather dry yet sweet whiskey/chocolate finish/linger. Sublime.
