Cycle Brewing Patch Kit Porter
On tap at Cycle Brewing

I couldn't pass this up, a wheat porter brewed with lactose!

It looks like a porter with a deep brown-black body that only shows the slightest glimmer of ruby and mahogany highlights when held to the light. The head is a frothy dark tan and holds well, leaving some nice lacing behind.

It also smells like a porter, although I guess that should be the case as lactose adds no aroma, and the grain bill would have to have a huge amount of wheat in it to make it's way through the roasty and dark chocolate notes that are there.

The flavor, also, is that of a porter. The wheat may give it a bit of depth, but it's not really distinguishable. A beer with the same depth of malt character could have been achieved through good quality malts, but that's neither here nor there, and that's also not to say it's not good, it is, just don't expect it to to be a "wheat porter". The lactose, it seems to me, is noticeable, but I'm not even sure of how to describe it as it doesn't really have any particular flavor, and doesn't really add much sweetness. It's nicely balanced though, not presenting too much malt, nor too much bitterness; and just the right amount of dark malt acidity to give it an edge without allowing it to build in the mouth. Finally, there's just the right amount of leafy/grassy and mildy floral hops against the gently roasted, chocolatey, and caramel malt flavors so that they're noticeable without being overdone or infringing upon the malt, which is of course what this beer is all about.

The mouthfeel is where the lactose comes in, and I'd call it medium bodied and smooth, almost creamy, with a median, fine bubbled carbonation that softens a bit as you progress through the glass.

Overall I found it quite pleasant, rich, and pleasing. Another example of the quality brewing coming out of Cycle.

32 oz. growler poured into a Teku snifter.

Appearance - Slightly transparent black. Nice khaki head. Good surface wisps and a nice collar.

Smell - Nutty and roasty. Slightly sweet.

Taste - Roasty. Lots of bitter chocolate. Nutty caramel. Sweet. Bitter as soon as the sweetness abates.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied. Well carbonated for the age of the growler.

Overall - Decent porter. Maybe would have tasted better earlier in the tasting.
