Appearance: Black as night but a huge problem has arisen, barely any head was produced and it quickly evaporated. I can still see thin carbonation trying to appear on the surface of the beer, but I suspect this bottle wasn't sealed right. Sadly no bottled on date to confirm that fact.
Smell: Certainly Vanilla is the dominate aroma, but I do detect well roasted malt in the background. Warming doesn't help it either way.
Taste: The Vanilla is consistent across the drink, serving to walk hand in hand with the beer aspects which are a burn molasses like malt at the start and a shift to earthy hops. It tastes like it would be good, but it's hard to gauge because of the lack of carbonation.
Mouthfeel: She's flat, so points get deducted both for the lack of head and the fact it's flat. The transitioning is good, the aftertaste is a mild vanilla, but it's flatter then a tire that's been slashed six times.
Drinkability: Medium bodied and if not for the carbonation I'd find this very agreeable. It doesn't go out of control on the sweet end of things like many Vanilla Porters do and it isn't one of those stouts leaving you searching for it either. Once again though this is hard to gauge.
Final Thoughts: This was a profound disappointment, but not because the beer was necessarily bad but because it was flat. I'm going to chalk this up to a bad cap, but I've reviewed other beers that had quality control issues before, and I'm not about to stop now. I'd really like to try this again next time I'm passing through.
