BOTTLE: 50cl. Brown glass. Appealing label art. Branded brown-copper pry-off crown cap.

Served cold into a pilsner glass in Helsinki (where it was purchased at Alko Arkadia) and allowed to come to temperature over the course of consumption. Reviewed live as a Belgian style ale with rowan berries.

6.3% ABV. Best before: 29.06.2016.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: ~2.5 inches wide. Off-white colour. Fair creaminess, froth, and consistency. Leaves no lacing as it recedes. Retention is above average - ~4-5 minutes.

BODY: Hazy murky copper of average vibrance. No yeast or sediment is visible. Seems filtered.

Look well-carbonated. Lacks unique or special characteristics.

AROMA: Dry juniper-like berry notes which I can only assume are the rowan berries. Pale malts. Hints of biscuity yeast. Obvious acidity.

Lacks a distinctive Belgian yeast, calling into question whether this is true to the Belgian ale style at all. The berries are interesting, but they seem to mask the rest of the beer, preventing any other notes from surfacing.

I find no hop notes, and the malt profile is muted.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE: The berry is nice, bringing some brighter berry notes in addition to the juniper-like dryness. If I didn't know this was technically rowan berry, I'd definitely think it was juniper, but luckily it's not too gin-like. (For the record, I don't know what the hell rowan berry is). Some bitterness from the berries replaces what would be the role of bittering hops, but there isn't much in terms of malts or malty sweetness for the rowan berries to balance; this has one of the most muted and reticent malt profiles I've ever experienced in an (ostensible) Belgian ale.

I do find some dry yeast notes, but there isn't a distinctive or signature Belgian flair. Still, this flavour profile is cohesive and structurally balanced, with fair complexity. I did expect more of a bursting fruity berry presence, not the depleted dry berry character featured here, and I hoped for more of a rustic Belgian ale yeast strain with a different attenuation.

Too bitter overall, which is my biggest criticism.

TEXTURE: Has a juniper-like dryness, but it's not unrefreshing. Slightly coarse, and somewhat rough and/or scratchy on the palate, with a dragging presence that emphasizes the dominant berry notes. Medium-bodied.

The texture does fit the taste to the extent that the dryness matches the rowan berries, but there isn't a perfect harmony of mouthfeel and flavour.

OVERALL: Drinkable and enjoyable. I like it, and it's one of the better beers I've had from Rekolan, but it's more an experimental novelty beer than a gestalt deliberate offering. I wouldn't go out of my way to track down a second bottle, but it's an interesting collaboration beer featuring an underutilized ingredient, and I'll enjoy finishing the bottle. ABV is well-hidden. This won't impress the discerning drinker, but it's worth trying if you chance across it. Not much of a Belgian ale, but above average outside of style conventions.
