A 500ml bottle with a BB of July 2017. Acquired ages ago from a local offie.
A: Poured into a tulip pint glass. A deep coppery-marmalade colour with faint haze and good carbonation. Produces a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a minute or two before reducing to a patchy surface layer.
S: Aroma of sweet caramel malt with hints of subtle pine resin, weed, mild citrus peel, ale yeast, grain, a twinge of rye and a faint underlying earthiness. Slightly soapy overtones and a whiff of smokiness. OK but could be hoppier.
T: Tastes of caramel malt with notes of mild pine resin/weed, subtle citrus peel, barley sugar, grain, light rye, ale yeast and faint earthiness. A subdued, hoppy bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and lightly tingly, with soft carbonation and good body. Quite chewy for the strength. Aftertaste of light pine resin, hop bitterness, caramel malt and yeast.
O: OK but unexceptional. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour are dominated by sweet malt and yeast with hints of hop character. The rye is well hidden and makes little impact. Nice body; thick and smooth. This bottle is probably a bit too old and past it's best. At any rate, decent but not worth making a special effort for.

Bottle pour into pint glass.
Beneath a fairly generic, slightly underpowered IPA is a hint of rye spiciness. A bit citrussy and some nice malt flavours. Went quite well with a curry as an easy drinker but not really much else to say. Pleasant but nothing to write home about.

Pint at Drygate, Glasgow:
Another fairly enjoyable IPA from Drygate, definitely their specialty although none have been great so far. More sweet than expected (especially the nose) but balanced after that with nice hops, malts and citrus with nice bitterness towards the end. I'll likely have this again somewhere at some point but it's not one I'll go hunting for.

From their info:
Style: Rye IPA
Malts: Maris Otter, Rye, Crystal Rye, Carafa
Hops: Chinook, Centennial, Mosaic, Nugget
Alcohol By Volume: 5.0%
IBU: 40
Original Gravity: 1.046
Availability: Year-Round
So at 40 IBUs and 5% it's a tad weak for a proper modern American IPA.
It's a fairly decent American Rye pale ale without ever excelling. Pours an amber copper, minimal head, modern hoppy aroma, some spicey rye in the taste, touch of toffee as it warms?, fairly insubstantial mouthfeel, pleasant and unintimidating bitterness.
Bottle from Sainsburys, £1.80 so pretty cheap. One thing to note, the BBE date I believe is 18 months for this beer which is a bit silly. Thankfully this is only one month old.
