Reviewed from notes taken in summer 2014.
On-draught into a pilsner glass in Wroclaw. 18 zloty/50cl pour.
Saison.
APPEARANCE: No bubble show forms as it's poured.
Head is a quarter of a finger of foam, with above average (~3 minute) retention. Average thickness, creaminess, complexion, and consistency. No lacing adheres to the sides of the glass as it recedes.
Body is a clear translucent copper colour of above average vibrance. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible within. Appears adequately carbonated.
Poor looking for a saison. There's no visible lively yeast and it has a sterile filtered appearance instead of a rustic murky/hazy body. Looks nice disregarding style conventions, but it's far from unique or special.
AROMA: Smells like an IPA, not a saison. I had to triple check I was served the correct beer. Floral hop notes, pale malts, some fruity and slightly juicy hop notes, and a hint of nectary hop character. It does verge on delving into the stale orange juice note I despise in IPAs, but luckily it never fully commits.
In any case, this is a piss-poor aroma for a saison, if that's what they're indeed after. I'm reviewing this as an IPA going forward; this is definitely far from the intended style.
Aromatic intensity is mild. It's a pleasant aroma with no obvious flaws, overt off-notes, or overt booze.
TASTE: Juicy, fruity hop character, light floral hops, tangerine, pale malts, a kiss of sweetbread, cream. and some caramalt. It's balanced for an IPA, if a bit simple.
Depth, duration, and intensity of flavour are average. I do like it generally speaking, but it offers no nuance, little subtlety, and no unique characteristics.
Build is cohesive, but it never quite feels like a gestalt harmonious whole of a beer.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, of apt thickness, and unrefreshing. This texture suits the taste decently, but doesn't feel custom-tailored specifically to it; it doesn't accentuate specific notes in the flavour profile. A bit overcarbonated, but not sharp or biting. More of a juicy oily taste would help coax out more depth of flavour from the hops.
Not oily, astringent, harsh, gushed, hot, or boozy.
OVERALL: I have no idea why they brand this as a saison. The bar assures me it's correctly labelled. As an IPA, it's above average and enjoyable, if horribly priced by Polish standards. It's quite drinkable and I'll enjoy finishing it, but it will confuse saison lovers.
