Our flagship beer, this is the first beer that Dan perfected. It quickly became a favorite for it’s roasted malt notes and middle-of-the-road, balanced flavor. Easy transition from Red Ales, Brown ales and some darker lagers.

From a 16 oz can with no noticeable canning date but given to me as a gift on June 25, 2023.

Attractive looking darker amber pour under a boisterous, pillowy, off-white head. It retains.

Aroma of dark roasted malts, a hint of chocolate, caramel, toffee, and some light smoke.

Medium or better mouthfeel.

The taste is sweet and malt forward with a char background and a mild to moderate traditional earthy bitterness coming up on the rear. Rich and bolder than some ESBs.

Pint can - no date - poured into a Green Man Pub glass at 40°F.

Pours a slightly hazed unfiltered tarnished copper hue, topped with a finger of coarse off-white head with poor retention and decent lacing. Visible effervescence.

Nose: Very characteristic malts with the right amount of sweet caramel, grain, and a touch of ashen char. The char is earthy and deep, lending an almost peaty element, which nicely compliments the earthy, spicy Euro-style hop notes, which are subdued, but present.

Palate: The beer greets the palate with grain, nutty, though not sweet maltiness, and roasted malts, which lend some chocolate, ash, and some earthiness. The ashiness is a nice component - not super acrid, but adds some nice depth. The hops are earthy, herbal, and spicy, lacking any and all fruitiness, though the yeast fills in that gap. Into the finish, the hops take on a resinous character, which paired with the charred malt provides a nice balanced tannic bitterness. Fairly dry.

Mouthfeel/Body: The beer is pretty light in body. The darker malts do add some body, and the hops and char lend additional presence, but the beer remains light, only just avoiding coming across thin. Effervescence is pretty standard - maybe a touch low, but not to its detriment. Drying finish.

Overall: This is a nice change of pace, and a noble effort from Rock Harbor. I cannot say it's the best ESB ever, and I do prefer Fuller's, however, this one has some unique character with that ashen malt and spicy hop presence. Maybe slightly against the grain, but all-in-all, it's certainly an enjoyable offering.

Had a pint with appetizers today 9-3-19 at the brewpub for $5.00.

Beer was served a murky brown with no head.

Nose was slightly fruity with a bit of crackers and toast in the background.

Taste was a touch sweet with the malt base combining with a light hop addition. Bitterness was 3/10 on my scale.

Mouthfeel was medium bodied and not exceedingly smooth or refreshing.

Overall not a bad beer. Wanted to try an ESB since they are rarely scene these days. It was OK.

On tap at the brewery (not the pub). Pours a dark golden color, not quite amber. Minimal white head that falls quickly, but appears to have ample carbonation floating up in the glass.

Aroma is malty, caramel sweetness, a little floral and grassy, apple.

The taste is sweet malt, followed by the hops contributions and a nice level of bitterness to back up the malt and hop flavors. There is some fruitiness in the way of apple. Decent enough and seems fairly representative of the style.

The feel was medium-bodies, leaning towards the crisp side yet with a little sticky feel to it.

Overall, a decent enough beer but not one to actively seek out.
