Our Scottish has been a taproom favorite since the beginning of Berthoud Brewing’s history. It is malty with caramel sweetness and just a hint of smoke. The light body mysteriously creates a bold taste. Listen to the whisper that calls you back for another pint… or two… or three….

Bought two cans from Beer Drop and will drink the second. A malt-head's delight.
While Fireside Scottish is no Robert The Bruce, Berhoud's rendition could become so in a decade or so. Balanced, the recipe doesn't need too many tweaks. (More malt-hop interplay in the finish should be possible with 7.2 ABV). But the main ingredient for success is greater distribution for this gentle, malty brew.

For my micro-review of Berhoud.... they have lots of competition in the northern Front Range and probably have found their niche in this Range dominated by hops. But what I like about Berthoud is they don't try to do too much: in eight years, they have produced only 29 brews on BA and 28 on UnTappd. That means that they stick to their knitting and focus on improving their malty brews. And Fireside certainly is that, being their flagship with over 50% more ratings on UnTapped than Berthoud's #2. However at eight years old, their website could be developed further; particularly if they expect wider distribution.

10/31/22 Had on a rainy Halloween. Edited the above. No change in rating. C U.

Not bad but not great either, idk. I definitely would have another if it was free but this isn't something I'd have spent money on even just looking at the cans. Brewery should consider a rebrand if possible. Idk who would buy this in a big box store in the suburbs. Still pretty decent though...

From Beer Drop, no dating on the can.

It pours a reddish brown with an inch of foam, initially. Shrinking is slow.

Loads of caramel malt in the nose with hints of fruitiness, smoke.

Taste is very malty, nice caramel malt, hints of dark fruits and smoke. Alcohol is non intrusive.

Good medium mouthfeel, good Scottish Ale.

L- Mid dark brown and reddish color with short lived off white head.

N- Roasted malt on the nose with a bit of very light yeast.

T- Malty ale with a hint of sweetness and no hop bite to counteract. Has a definite taste of a smoky wood fire, yet the smoke is not noticed on the nose.

M- Medium bodied with a creamy smooth feel and a nice clean finish. Does not feel thick or drying.

O- A nice Scottish that has less sweet notes than say Old Chubb and less smoke than some peat oriented beers. The smoke note is not necessarily part of the style and for that reason I will have to drop it down a notch.

12oz can with no date.
A nice drinking brownish red ale. Strong caramel notes in the aroma and flavor. The hops fail to bring any aroma or flavor, and barely bring any bitterness. Definitely on the sweeter side. It is a big beer, and feels like a big beer. Feels slick with well matched carbonation.
