Canned 1/20/17; drank 2/5/17 @ the Yarchives.
Black/brown appearance.
A rough pour yielded a big dark tan head; a curtain of lace.
Fresh earth, mild cream & faint trash water notes in the nose; uh oh...
Medium thick mouthfeel. Bakers chocolate & fresh earth flavors up front; a bitter, harsh metallic mineral bite on the finish.
Just a brutal, unpleasant beast. Avoid.

Very dark brown with two fingers of cola-colored head. Modest lacing.
Big molasses aroma with hints of vanilla, wood smoke and raisin.
Taste follows the nose, with a nice alcohol bite added to the mix, and the vanilla ratcheted up a couple notches. Like a molasses bar dipped in booze. There's a strong, Baker's chocolate and coffee-like bitterness on the backend.
Medium bodied with a nice scraping bite in the feel, presumably from the carbonation.
This is how to do a bitter stout. Great stuff.
Canned on 3/22/17.

Pours almost black. Thick, short, brief head fading to a lasting cap.
Smells roasted Malts, dark fruit, dark chocolate and coffee.
Tastes roasted malts, coffee, hints of dark fruit and hops bitterness. Finish is light bitter chocolate and roasted malts. Creamy medium body and smooth medium carbonation.

While AIS is not in my top 10 styles, I've somehow managed to have 11 of the top 12 with BA ratings. Since my "production" drops off drastically after that, I should not pretend to be an expert on the up-and-comers.
But Dark Tower may be one of them. I had it side-by-side with a day-old Speedway Stout and the quality was similar. Amazing really for a young brewer to have developed a recipe for what can be a tricky style. Like Minds (a clever name) contracts out to Chicago brew-plant. (I found Dark Tower at Beer Temple.)
Subtracting out the abundant coffee in Speedway, this Dark Tower has a similar simple fullness and balance. (Although you should know that I sampled both while dipping my spoon into a my wife's caramel sauce; making me a very lucky man.)
If you can find Dark Tower, try it. A respectable offering.

16oz can, dated 1/20/17. Pours mostly black with a medium sized khaki head; some lacing. Smells of roasted malt, molasses, dark fruit, cocoa, coffee, and earthy hops. The taste follows exactly with roasted malt, molasses, cocoa, earthy hops, coffee, and dark fruit. Medium bitterness and dryness. No noticeable alcohol. Average body and above average carbonation for the style. Overall, it's a well-rounded and straightforward IS.
