they call this a russian imperial i think, but it manifests itself far more as a black ipa to me than anything else. its sticky think and black, not much head, but a huge pine hop nose coming from it and a of bitterness with both the grain and the hops combining. mouthfeel is highly viscous, palate coating, but thankfully not sweet at all, not even the caramel malt middle these sometimes have, its charred and dark all the way though. seems to me like C type west coast hops in this one, i get a lot of that pine bight and heavy bitterness, but still some oil content. not as nuanced as others on the grain front i dont think, it could use a few more wrinkles to be more interesting and fun to engage with, but this is also one of the better beers going at this new spot, and definitely worth trying. the beer is real strong, but its hidden well. i could see this one becoming quite popular, its a little something different, fusing the two styles.
