Crazy active carbonation upon opening. Nice very dark standard stout look with an everlasting mocha head. Thick lacing remains during drinking. I would rate the look higher but for the too-active carbonation. Aroma is very nice; dark burnt malts with some chocolate, coffee & other unnamed pleasant smells. Taste has the standard stout flavours but is overly sweet, with burnt malt leading the way with hints of chocolate, toasted granola, & a very sweet caramel. Mouthfeel is ok but perhaps a touch thin. A decent enough stout but not one I will seek out again.

Nice stout. Originally called evening stout but the rebranded to a true local landmark.

Toasty, but lightweight stout. Chocolate and ash in the nose. Dark bittersweet chocolate, a hint of coffee and ash to taste. Thin-bodied, slighty watery mouthfeel. It don't linger much. Drinkable, but unremarkable.

500 mL bottle picked up at the brewery in March; served slightly chilled.
Pours an inky black colour, producing one centimetre of loose, soapy-looking light-tan coloured foam on top. It recedes steadily over the next couple of minutes, resulting in a thin, bubbly collar and filmy cap; no lace to speak of. On the nose, the roasted malts make their presence known immediately - dark chocolate and black coffee, with accompanying sweet notes of toffee, plum and raisin. Faintly smoky, with a lightly herbal, earthy bitterness rounding the bouquet out nicely.
This is a serviceable, if unremarkable dry Irish-style stout. Roasted malt flavours mingle with notes of caramel and toffee initially; mild hints of chocolate and coffee cross the palate next, but are disappointingly fleeting. A faint suggestion of dark fruit is followed up by a leafy, earthy hop bitterness that fades into a weak charry astringency as you near the finish. Roasty aftertaste; pleasingly dry. I like what I am tasting, but it just seems so watered-down. Unfortunately, the limp mouthfeel - light, watery, and with very little carbonation - is not aiding this beer's case. Though the bubbles do gently prickle your palate, this one is almost as soft on the palate as a nitro beer. Easy to drink, and inoffensive.
Final Grade: 3.37, a B-. 100 Steps Stout was one of the most tempting of Royal City's flagship offerings, at least by my preferences - but I must admit I'm a little disappointed with it. This one tastes ok, but the flavour profile is very subdued - and the weak mouthfeel just isn't working for me. If it weren't for its enjoyably dry finish and high sessionability, this beer wouldn't have much going for it. A middling effort - I'd drink it again, but it's not something you'll want to go out of your way for.
