32 oz. screw-cap bottle, picked up at the brewery; bottled May 18 2015. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a cloudy copper-amber colour, capped off with one finger of loose, soapy off-white froth. It steadily wilts over the next five minutes or so, leaving behind a cap and collar consisting of huge, soapy bubbles, in addition to an uninterrupted ring of lace. The aroma is abundant with tropical fruit notes - particularly pineapple juice, with additional notes of mango, orange rind and strawberry. Some biscuity malt and caramel is also detectable; quite an enticing bouquet.
This isn't a bad IPA, but it's not a particularly good one, either - serviceable is probably the word I'd use to describe it. One thing it does have going for it is a robust malt bill - bready and biscuity, with flavours of toffee and a lightly toasted, nutty quality. The hops take over in the latter half, providing a distinctly earthy, piney bitterness that is jarringly unlike the aroma, save for a hint of pithy citrus. The aftertaste is profoundly bitter and persistent, with an earthy, almost herbal feel. Light-medium in body, with restrained carbonation levels and a relatively smooth, fulfilling feel on the palate - just about right for a 6% IPA. This isn't a perfect beer, but that doesn't mean I'm not enjoying it.
Final Grade: 3.35, a B-. Hopsy Turvy isn't one of the better IPAs I've had over the past couple of months. The nose is a bit of a tease, as the hops (Mosaic?) leave a nice impression in the bouquet - but the flavour profile is a rather straightforward, one-note affair. There is nothing technically wrong with this beer, but given the ridiculous quantity of hopped pale ales available these days, I don't think this is a recipe that will stand out in an increasingly dense crowd. It's a middling brew that I don't regret purchasing, but probably wouldn't be in a hurry to recommend.
