32 oz. screwcap bottle picked up at the brewery; bottled Jun 26 2016 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a hazy, pale golden colour, fitted with a half-inch crown of soapy white head that wilts within 90 seconds. A bubbly collar of froth is the only survivor - not much in the way of lace, and the surface is otherwise bare. Very subtle aroma; the only element I can definitively distinguish is butterscotch, and other than that it's up to interpretation. I am getting suggestions of red berries, cantaloupe and orange citrus, with perhaps a few hints of floral, leafy-green hops and marmalade.

Not terrible, but a few flaws stick in my craw. Doughy malts and honey sweetness come through, with notes of toffee and bread eventually yielding to the relatively low-key hop bill. Diacetyl. Melon, apricot and muddled citrus mid-sip, with pine resin and earthy, muddy bitterness at the finish. Not particularly bitter - it's listed at a modest 50 IBUs - but the astringency is potent enough to qualify this as an actual IPA. Medium in body, with low carbonation levels that give this pale ale an exceptionally smooth, slick texture. Easy to drink, with the 6.5% almost entirely masked from perception - drinkability would seem to be this one's biggest strength.

Final Grade: 3.28, a C+. As I gulped down my first sip, two thoughts flitted in sequence through a typically-empty space in my head. The first? "This tastes weird." The second? "It's not much of an IPA, either." Harsh criticism by my standards, but truth be told, Heckler IPA isn't all that hard to drink, and it did grow on me a little as it warmed. I eventually started to ignore the diacetyl and enjoy it, which is why it ended up with a passable grade. I dunno, I just think something was up with this batch. If they re-make Heckler in the future I might consider a re-sampling, but not in this relatively pricey format.
