Got this one from hopsolutely this past summer

From a bomber into a snifter
IBU: 50

APPEARANCE: Pours a two finger, thicker looking, off-white head with excellent retention. Nice and creamy head. Deep rust orange body, clear, with no carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a full wisp and clings to the sides of the glass. A splotchy wisp remains leaving lots of lacing down the glass. Looks great.

SMELL: Caramel and light toffee here, with some grainy aromas and grassy hops. Milder. Nothing wrong, but not much going on really.

TASTE: Milder flavors as well. Caramel, earthy notes and grassy hops at the swallow. Milder finish with notes of caramel and toffee sweetness, grassy hops and some decent bitterness lingering on the palate. Standard procedure I guess.

PALATE: Medium-fuller body with medium levels of carbonation. Creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes a touch dry. Some bitterness lingers. Good feel here.

OVERALL: This was alright. The aroma and flavor could have been a little more forthcoming, but the components were all there. Where this beer shined was in the look and feel, both of which were excellent, making it very easy to drink. A little bolder of an aroma and flavor profile and this would be right up there with the best of them. Would definitely like to try more from this brewery if I can. Maybe a trip down to Guelph next year is in order. Pick it up if you see it. Thanks again guys. Cheers!

650 mL bottle picked up at the brewery less than 2 weeks ago; served barely chilled. Not sure what style this is supposed to be - they call it a "strong golden ale", which isn't a category on BA, so after taking a few sips I used my best judgement and added it as an English Strong.

Pours a moderately clear copper-amber colour, capped off with one finger of soapy, off white-coloured foam. It fades off before the three minute mark, leaving behind a bubbly collar and some scant lacing. Pleasant aroma with restrained notes of tea-leafy hops, sponge toffee, toasted malts and some lightly herbal spiciness. Hints of plum, bread pudding and biscuit, with a touch of metallicity.

An enjoyable strong ale, though I'm still not sure exactly what they were going for here - there seems to be an almost Belgian ale-like element to the flavour, but those hops on the back end really remind me of an English ale. Toffee and caramel sweetness come through, as do some bready malts and toasted biscuit notes. Mild notes of plum and sultana raisin mid-sip, with some grassy, leafy hop notes taking over before the finish. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation levels that give this strong ale a slightly crisp bite. Goes down smoothly, with little sign of the sturdy abv. A nice little strong ale.

Final Grade: 3.89, a solid B+. Royal City's 2nd Anniversary Ale isn't a head-turner, but it's still a respectable brew that I have few objections to. Unique - reminds me of an English ESB crossed with a Belgian pale ale, with a relatively well-balanced flavour profile that I find highly agreeable from start to finish. Can't think of too many comparable beers that Ontario BAs will have much familiarity with... perhaps Iron Duke? I've always been fond of that beer, so it shouldn't come as a shock that I like this one, too. Worth a try, but probably not something to be sought after.
