Brewed in collaboration with artist SKGN.
The first in our series of IPAs with artist SKGN coincided nicely with the arrival into the UK of the 2019 harvest hop varieties from Australia.
Although it is the US varieties that get most attention and widest usage, Australian varieties have some truly unique qualities and can pack equally a fruity punch. We chose to focus on two varieties – Enigma and Topaz.
Enigma became a big favourite in the brewhouse last year and we’re looking forward to trying it out more through the autumn. It has a pretty unique profile bringing to mind melon, pinot grigio and the ever-popular juicy tropical fruit character to back it up. It pairs excellently with the resinous qualities of Topaz, which shines in IPA’s with notes of orange and lychee.
As a base for these flavours we put together a grist of malted and flaked oats and filled out further with maltodextrin. We also threw in some citra for bonus tropical fruit and Columbus for a balancing touch of pepper and pine.

Pours a hazy, dark orange coloration with a large, quite fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and tropical/citrus hops, with notes of mango, papaya, peach and orange. Taste is a good balance between light biscuity malt and juicy tropical/citrus hops, with the tropical hops dominating with slightly acidic notes of mango and papaya, as well as some peach and orange and a distinct, quite herbal, dankness. Finishes with a light/medium bitterness, light hop bite and some tropical notes and herbal dankness lingering in the aftertaste. Soft, pillowy mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.
Quite a nice NEIPA that may not be quite as juicy as some, but has got a rather nice herbal dankness and decent bitterness to it, which I personally rather enjoy in a NEIPA, as well as some lovely tropical, citrus and peach notes. My kind of NEIPA really, juicy, but not overly sweet, with a distinct bitterness and dankness, as well as a light biscuity malt presence and very lightly acidic hop bite.

Pours a hazy orange with a couple of fingers of soft, fluffy head.
Smell is fruity and slightly sweet. Notes of lemon, orange sorbet, vegetable stoch and a hint of earthiness.
Taste is fruity with notes of overripe stone fruit, mango, citrus and a little bit of earthiness. Moderate bitterness and quite refreshing.
Mouthfeel is medium, soft and well carbonated.
Overall, a nice IPA that would be better without the earthy notes.
