Brewed in collaboration with Voodoo Brewing Company.
We weren't going to miss the opportunity to brew an imperial stout with the crew from Voodoo whilst they were in town for Dark City. Few brewers come close when it comes to brewing straight-up dark delights, so we didn’t want to mess around - we went as big as we could!
After deciding we wanted to stay clear of adjuncts, our focus was very much on selecting the perfect mix of grains to build up the bulk of the brew, ensuring the deepest, darkest colour, plenty of depth of flavour but keeping the harsher roast tones to a minimum. We hand picked different malts from different suppliers, ranging from brown malt by our local maltster, Thomas Fawcett’s, through to Belgian special B and chateau chocolate malts. Alongside those we used some German chocolate rye, caramunich malts and rounded everything out with plenty of flaked oats.
Expect silky dark chocolate, light toastiness, some earthy spice from the rye and layers of dark berry all built over the thickest, most luxurious stout we’ve ever brewed.

Black, with a nice creamy brown head. Good smell of treacle, some roast, nice chocolatyness. Nice thickness, very rich, bit boozy. Taste has a solid bitterness, with plenty of roast. Sweet maltyness, lots of coffee. Smooth. Very well made, a proper beer.

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a large, creamy, mocha-colored head. Smell is rather unspectacular, with some faint, roasted, caramel malt, chocolate and an odd, floral/earthy accent reminiscent of cola. Taste is a clear improvement on the nose, although the balance still feels a little off, with the lightly roasted and sweet caramel malt, chocolate and dark fruit notes of raisin and date dominating here, barely kept in check by some lighter dark, bitter coffee, licorice and earthy rye spice that feels more pleasant and less floral than in the nose, although a slight hint of that certain cola note remains. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some roasted, caramel malt, coffee, chocolate and earthy spice lingwering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a rich body and light carbonation.
While the aroma initially is somewhat unpleasant here, the taste grew on me as this warmed. It's a bit too sweet for my personal taste with the caramel malt, chocolate and dark fruits clearly dominating, but being balanced somewhat nicely by some roasted, bitter notes, licorice and that certain rye spice, as well as lighter accents of coffee and floral/herbal hops. Given the involvement of Voodoo here, I certainly had higher expectations of this, although it's a rather solid Imperial Stout at the end of the day, that is just not quite to my personal taste and certainly nothing special as far as I'm concerned. Mouthfeel is good, but far away from the advertised "thick, luxurious" quality.
