THE SECOND IN A SERIES OF SINGLE HOP IPAS WITH LAURA SLATER SHOWCASES PROBABLY THE MOST EXCITING NEW HOP VARIETY TO COME TO MARKET IN A FEW YEARS, STRATA.
A product of Indie Hops, Oregon's breeding program, this variety first came to our attention late last year whilst rubbing hop samples with a potential supplier. We were able to get hold of a small amount straight from harvest to add to a blended IPA a few months ago, and now we've been able to give Strata the single-hop showcase that we've wanted to for a while. Strata brings together such a wide variety of flavours that you could easily think it was a blend. Distinctly passionfruit in character up front, this is backed up by juicy ripe mango, pineapple, orange zest, honeydew melon and plenty of resinous pine character underneath, giving a depth of three-dimensionality of flavour that hasn't been seen since the early experimental releases of Mosaic.
We put together a classic NE IPA base with plenty of oats and wheat, went generous on the whirlpool addition to see how the resinous notes would present from the hot side addition, then dry hopped at 24g/l, to ensure you can smell the passionfruit aroma coming from down the street.

Pours a hazy light orange with thick, soft head and tons of debris.
Smell is juicy and dank with notes of melon, gooseberries, grapes, grapefruit and a peppery hint.
Taste is juicy and fruity with notes of gooseberries, grapes, melon, citrus and a moderate bitterness. Just a hint of booze, but none of the coconut hint I usually get from Strata.
Mouthfeel is medium, soft, pillowy and well carbonated.
Overall, a very nice IPA, shame about the floaties.
