In tribute to Guinness Foreign Extra, a constant through Lanre Bakare’s tales of party and song, we dug into the history of the style – prominent roast barley and black malt profile, dried fruit aromas, and a sweet, rounded body – and fine-tuned it to be a respectful but distinctly Monk take on the style. Expect flavours of coffee, tobacco, and bitter chocolate rounded with notes of sweet caramel, molasses, and sweet cherry.

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a large, creamy head. Smells of roasted malt, chocolate, berries and lighter coffee and herbal hop notes. Taste is an excellent balance of roasted, slightly caramelly malt and herbal hops, with strong dark, bitter chocolate and lighter coffee and berry notes of red and black currants, as well as just a hint of tobacco and licorice. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some chocolate, berries and tobacco lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

While I think that this is almost too rich for a Foreign/Export Stout, that can hardly be held against it, while there really is an excellent balance of sweet, roasted, bitter and fruity elements to this, with it retaining a mostly roasted , dry and bitter character that is enhanced by some sweeter caramel malt and slightly tart berry notes, with some tobacco and licorice adding a bit more depth here. Overall, this just makes for a terrific Stout with an excellent balance and subtle complexity, while I absolutely love the dry and bitter character here.

De 32gp. En copa de pinta inglesa de Codi. Con papas fritas Santa Ana. Jugando a Fortnite. Fácil de beber a pesar del abv, aunque no encuentro mucho de lo que dice la descripción. Lo que hallo es un perfil torrefacto que, sin estar mal, tampoco resulta nada especialmente memorabl

Blind-tasted except for the beer's name and brewery/country.
L- Pours quite 'thick and quiet' I hope that doesn't smell a beer thickened by a stack of carbs/sugar. Black to the naked eye, and held right by a halogen bulb black still, no light gets through. Pours with a 5mm dark tan head.
S- Toasty, log-fires, coffee. [I don't smell any rich/sweetness...]
T- Smoke note, toasty, deeeep roast, charred burnt wood, some hops show themselves into the finish.
F- It has some balancing richness in the feel but TBH the smoke 'n roast dominate much all else here. Put another way I haven't even stopped to consider ABV% here yet as I've had little stand-alone sign it's present.
O- It's a statement beer, and with that in mind nicely done for a mega-beast of a deep/roasty stout. Just don't drink it accompanying Dover sole or scallops or anything light, $ and delicate hehe. Pair with pungent curry, or cheese so blue and ripe it can probably walk under it's own steam. Or a hot kipper and toast breakfast, if you're hard enough.
Review/scoring all done, now the reveal, I get to read the bottle lables to see what I missed! ==> Blimey 8.3%, there really was no 'above the parapet' sign of that at all; quite amazing as such ABV is darn hard to almost entirely hide. Contains: maltodextrin (why oh why...). The can has a peel-back lable revealing a huuuuuge amount of info that I might get to reading tomorrow... OMG, never seen such a huge spiel on a can before...
440ml can £5.10 BB: 20/10/2021. Bought from TremblingMadness, York/UK as part of a large pick-your own consignment to London.
