Put to the people’s choice, we asked you what flavour combination you'd like to see in an updated version of our Classic range porter. With a landslide victory, Britain’s love of biscuits prevailed, and the second iteration of Northern Star is a decadent chocolate, caramel and biscuit porter.

Discounted to minimum alcohol price at Morrisons. Very dark with luxurious beige head. The nose fits the billing with caramel, bourbon biscuits and a hint of hazelnut. Taste starts very sweetly, chocolate syrup, then a biscuity phase and finally a more acrid roasted malt flavour with a bit of hazelnut and a hint of coffee, although not enough to put me off. Good stuff, although one small can is probably enough. It's a sipper for me.

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a huge, creamy, lasting head. Smell is completely dominated by an intense caramel aroma, with hints of milk chocolate also coming through, Taste is a great balance of biscuity, caramel, slightly roasted malt and distinct caramel and milk chocolate notes, with hints of coffee and licorice coming through as well. Finishes bittersweet, with a medium sweetness and some caramel and milk chocolate lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

I was worried that this would drift off too far into pastry stout territory at first, but although it's somewhat sweet, with the caramel and milk chocolate notes really dominating here, there is that slight roastiness and bitterness to this that just about balances this out nicely enough, with hints of coffee and licorice as well. That caramel and chocolate aroma really is intoxicating here, while this also manages to feel a lot richer than the low ABV would suggest as well.
