Got this one from rutger last summer. Thanks, dude!
From a 750 into a snifter
Batch 1
IBU: 40
Bottle 375
Aged in whisky barrels from Parallel Distillery
APPEARANCE: Pours a 2+ finger, medium looking, creamy, off-white head with great retention. Murky, opaque sienna brown with medium levels of carbonation. Head slowly fades to a full wisp and sticks to the sides of the glass. A splotchy wisp remains until the end leaving some nice lacing down the glass as it empties.
SMELL: Caramel, toffee, woody notes, vanilla and hints of rye on the nose. Decent strength here.
TASTE: Rye whisky, oak, and some caramel sweetness up front. Toffee and wood at the swallow. Bold and lingering finish of wood, vanilla and milk chocolate, rye whisky and some light spicy flavors. A good spicy rye quality with woody character as well.
PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Enough weight and creamy on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes a bit drier than expected. Good stuff.
OVERALL: This is quite good. Milder ABV for a barrel aged beer, but it’s got lots going on for sure. The sweet malt base is well put together and the wood aging adds another layer of sweet complexity overtop. Solid stuff and well worth checking out. Thanks again rutger!

Had an 8 oz pour on tap at the brewery on the day of its release. Review from notes.
Pours a reddish brown color with white head
Aroma is whiskey, vanilla, and a hint of caramel sweetness
Taste is also whiskey forward, slight woodiness, vanilla, toffee. Tastes kind of like a cocktail of some sort... Think whiskey, soda water and a touch of simple syrup.
Mouthfeel is a bit thin for the style, decently smooth finish
Overall, it's not as good as I had hoped, but it's not bad either.

Fair State stuff on tap is excellent, so I’m hoping that translates into their first (?) bottled barrel-aged brew. 750ML that looks like a wine bottle you’d put flowers in. Commodore 64 label.
The pour is thick brown-red with minimal carbonation. Nose clocks in with coconut, vanilla, sweetness.
Old Richmond Rye tastes green & young. Most noticeable is that this is thin for an old ale at 7.5%. After that there’s green, raw wood, some caramel, hazelnut. The barrel finally arrives in the middle with low-rider vanilla, touch of coconut, very light spicing but little more than a vague aftertaste of the actual rye. Not tough to drink, but half the bomber is definitely enough.
Once again Fair State’s bottled beer falls far short of their taps; it’s like the different between Courtney Cox in early Friends & Cougar Town. Very average.
