We're ushering in Year 6 of FSB, our shape-shifting annual imperial stout. This year we’re doing 3 installments of FSB, all of which are collaborations with Austin Jevne of Forager Brewery. Austin is the local pastry master, so you know you’re in for a treat in more ways than one. Bring your sweet tooth for FSB Pt. 3, a macaroon-inspired stout with coconut, chocolate, and vanilla.

A - Black pour with micro-thin tan lacing.

S - Mineral-like and slightly acidic chocolate with some faint coconut.

T - Chocolate, sticky sweet lactose, and coconut. There's some vanilla but it's buried way down in the mix.

M - Thick, viscous, lip smacking sticky.

O - One of my favorite styles but too much mineral coming through with alot of sweetness.

Pours out as a rich dark brown color with virtually no head retention. The smell of the beer sweet on the nose, very subtle coconut aroma to it. The taste was sweet but not cloying, it had hints of coconut but mostly chocolate running the show. The feel was smooth and full bodied. Overall it was a really good beer.

Appearance - The beee was black in appearance with a dark mocha head. Carbonation was visible.

Smell - The nose was a pretty run-of-the-mill sweet stout. I did not detect specific adjuncts.

Taste - My first thought was vanilla coconut candle wax. After initially being distinct, the profile bonds in tooth rotting sweetness. As my kidneys went into shock, I also noticed there was something perfumy about the profile as well. The aftertaste was so sweet, it brought to mind drinking undiluted fountain soda.

Mouthfeel - The carbonation seemed high for the style. The bubbles still could not sweep away the sweetness.

Mouthfeel - The beer was a mess. I could not finish it.

Poured from pint can into snifter.
A: Pours a dark black with 1/4 inch dark mocha head that quickly recedes.
S: Very sweet with coconut, vanilla, and milk chocolate.
T: Definitely macaroon. Loads of coconut and vanilla with some milk chocolate. Very straightforward.
M: Medium heavy body. Super sweet which completely masks the very high ABV.
D: The sweetness and ABV limit drinkability. If I’m going for a sipper, I like more depth/complexity. If you want a macaroon beer, you have found it.

The last of the FSB series for 2019 – one superb, one solid. Apparently this 16 oz. can is the tiebreaker. While watching Deliverance. Such a gentle movie.

Black. Thick. Brooding. Such a pretty beer. The nose is like sniffing a vanilla variant Three Musketeers bar. I’d hit that.

FSB 2019: Part 3 is thicker than Mulvaney, Graham, & Cohen. This is how you craft a pastry stout. Vanilla & coconut come on strong, chocolate is a distance show. Moist, raw sugar runs from front to back, & if you’re not a fan of sweet, stay far away. No apparent alcohol despite the sky-high ABV, but it must be there, because I can feel myself getting smarter already.

Putting these in a barrel might be too much, but I’d be game to try it if it came to that. Excellent beer.

16oz can. No dating information found.
Black colored body, that pours with a very fizzy head that disappears within thirty seconds. No lacing.
Aroma is slightly sweet from the vanilla, and lots of chocolate. There is a smell close to black licorice. The high ABV% is apparent.
Taste is lip smacking sweet, definitely a dessert pastry stout. Big chocolate presence. In the background is the dark fruit/licorice flavor. The vanilla and coconut provide a light air to the beer, more than distinct flavors. No bitterness at all. The after taste is a quick reminder of a macaroon.
Drinks a little thin. Sticky texture. Okay carbonation.
Really seems to clear up the sinuses. The calorie count from this must be very high.
