750 mL crowler. I've had a "rauch doppelbock" from Dovetail that had big smoked ham energy, but this is more restrained in that respect. Modest smoke on the nose, very little meatiness on the palate, and good malt sweetness and creamy mouthfeel. Some sharp notes--sulphates, maybe? Maybe tannic character from the foeder combines with rye spice, I'm not sure, but it stands out and throws off the balance for me.

Awesome smoked dopplebock. Well balanced, smooth, creamy. Even better after they poked it.

Tested from a 750ml crowler bought at the tap room.
Look: semi transparent (maybe a little hazy/murky) reddish amber body when held to the beer light. Nice tall fine (light beige) head that lasts a while leaving plenty of lacing. Nice looking beer
Smell: bread, sweet malt, and something else?? almond and wood maybe
Taste: You need to let this warm up some. It changes flavor with temp. Caramel, oak, micro amount of smoke, maybe toasted bread, Then a rye bitterness that doesn't fit in. Tastes good at first but the last 1/4 is odd.
Feel is ok not thin or thick, had plenty of carbonation that comes from the depths for a while.
It's ok but maybe it's just trying to be too much. Hopefully they re-brew this beer without the rye.
Brewery notes:
Foeder-aged Doppelbock with smoked and rye malts
Doppelbocks are strong, dark lagers that would have been historically been brewed by monks to use as a food substitute during Lent. Y’know, “liquid bread.” They also typically have the suffix “-ator” after their name. So, Cooperator seemed like a natural. Our version of Doppelbock is unique for two reasons: we added moderate amounts of smoked and rye malts, and we aged it in an oak foeder for almost two months. The addition of the hint of wood smoke and oak tannin balances the intense malt sweetness and caramel character from the hefty malt bill, consisting mainly of Munich malt.
