A simple hoppy beer. It's bright and crisp and perfect for a sunny day. Brewed with Pilsner malts and hopped enthusiastically with Mosaic, Simcoe and Nelson Sauvin.

While we might be best known for brewing hazy, softly bitter and highly tropical hoppy beer in the North East style, we've got a soft spot for the refreshing character of the modern classics coming out of those far shores to the West. River Hymnal harkens back to some of our favourite beers enjoyed while traveling through California and the Pacific Northwest.

This beer is bright, crisp and dry with a firm but satisfying bitterness. River Hymnal swims well with fried lake fish, tostadas or spicy fish tacos.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a Teku glass. From Erie St. Gastropub's bottle shop in nearby downtown Windsor. Canned October 1/25. My 15th beer from the Ottawa, Ontario brewery, and 6th for 2026. Continually praised by Gracie the cat...

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Aug 22 2024 and served barely chilled. Listed at 6.5%.

Pours a bright, clear, sunny golden-yellow hue, generating more than an inch of soapy, foamy white head that recedes within three or four minutes. A narrow ring of froth surrounds a filmy cap, with a beautiful half-inch band of lace adhering to the glass. Subtly vinous aroma with hints of grainy malts, clementine and grassy floral hops; suggestions of berries are faintly discernible.

It's a solid IPA, no doubt there. Citrusy at the forefront, with flavours of orange and grapefruit soon joined by passion fruit, grape and peach; meanwhile, the malt backbone supplies some wheaty, grainy background sweetness. Finishes with piney, earthy bitterness and floral hops; it's crisp and pretty dry for the style. Medium in body, with low carbonation that rolls softly along the tongue, resulting in a smooth, soft mouthfeel. I found this very drinkable for 6.5%, and could probably enjoy a few of these in a row.

Final Grade: 4.09, an impressive A-. I don't have a ton of previous experience with Dominion City beers, so take this opinion with a grain of salt, but I think River Hymnal is one of my favourites so far. Leaning towards the West Coast IPA template, but more like a super-crushable variation on that theme - really good stuff, and I wish this was available locally because I'd be buying it on the regular. If you like Fat Tug, give this brew a try - I don't think you'll be disappointed.
