Brewed in collaboration with our friends Lost Palms Brewing from Queensland's Gold Coast. We set out to brew an Australian style of flavour-packed beer with maximum drinkability. The result is a bright, hop-forward Extra Pale Ale displaying huge flavours and aromas of citrus zest with tropical and stone fruit undertones. Hopped with buckets of Cashmere, Mosaic and Segal Hop Ranch Zumo.

From a 355ml can poured into a pint glass. A two finger white head on a hazy gold.

Tropical fruit and some pine in the nose. Fruity hops over a malt backbone. Smooth. Hop flavours dominate. A moderately bitter strongly hop flavoured finish.

A medium body and good carbonation. Overall a decent American IPA. Not crazy hoppy but smooth and drinkable.

355 mL can purchased at the Upper Thames Brewing taproom; dated Apr 26 2024 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a foggy pale golden colour, stirring up two fingers of soapy, foamy white head that lasts for five minutes or so. A respectable swath of uneven lace is deposited onto the glass, with a frothy cap and collar lingering indefinitely. Mildly fruity aromas of melon, papaya, mandarin orange and lime - what I'm sensing is nice, but it's too reserved.

It's a tasty little pale ale, but the range of flavour is somewhat narrow. I'm getting melon, orange and lime zest, with hints of grainy malts and stone fruits; floral, slightly dank hops add some bitterness on the back end. Citrusy conclusion that fades into a dry aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with relatively low carbonation that rolls gently along the surface of the tongue, contributing to this brew's smooth, soft mouthfeel. Extremely quaffable - I could easily drink several of these over the course of an evening.

Final Grade: 3.83, a B+. Palm City XPA is a solid pale ale, though I'm not sure where the "X" comes into play. I found this brew's fruity, citrusy flavour profile to be approachable and appealing, but I don't expect it will raise many eyebrows - it's just lacking that extra 'oomph' to push it up into the next tier. That said, if this beer were locally available, I suspect I'd be buying it on a weekly basis - what it lacks in exceptionality, it makes up for in sessionability.
