Sampling a cellar temp bottle poured into my snifter. Picked up at the brewery several months ago. Bottled on date of 3/25/2020.
The beer pours a clear but very dark mahogany color with no light passing through the glass. I can see that it is partly cloudy as it pours from the bottle.
A dense fluffy khaki colored head of 1 cm foams up even with a gentle pour. This foam sticks around and floats as a sturdy surface layer. There is evidence of actives streams of carbonation feeding the foam with some movement just beneath the surface.
Aroma is big and boozy from the moment the cap begins to open. Deep bourbon notes and some dark fruits, raisin and red grape with brown sugar, caramel and some pipe tobacco. no hop presence really.
First sip reveals a silky smooth texture and soft gentle carbonation that rolls effortlessly across my palate. Medium to thicker body. A bit of a sipping beer, although it does go down easy, if that makes any sense.
Flavor is similar to nose with caramel and toffee mixing with brown sugar and some sweet bourbon. NOt cloying anywhere, but then rolls to a drying finish with some bite. I get a little black tea hop character and definitely some warming booze that shows up as the beer hits my belly.
Quite a nice smooth barleywine, another winner from Barreled Souls!
