Sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle. Picked up at the brewery in Oct 2021, had been refrigerated by brewery since bottling till pick up and in cellar temp at my house since then.
the bottle is slightly stained on the lower third ,possibly from cocoa.
The beer pours a dark cola brown to black coffee color with a creamy tan head of 1cm. This foam fades to one large island of thin foam and a thin edging around my glass. Most of the remaining foam does stick around.
the aroma is some dark chocolate, a bit of hot cocoa, an interesting sweet fruity note, maybe fig? I dont get any coconut here on the nose. Also not boozy.
the first sip reveals a medium body with soft and gentle carbonation and a smooth texture.
The flavor is hot cocoa powder a bit of roasted malt, again some sweet fruity note, sort of a candied orange maybe, but again, no coconut. I never get any sense of hops on this one and it isnt too boozy either. The finish moves back to cocoa powder, but also a bit of the lingering sweet fruit, which doesnt really work for me.
this honestly is just okay, no coconut, which maybe has faded, but also the sweet fruity thing kinda puts me off a little. Bummed about this one a little, and hope the base Joy and double coconut Joy are better than this one. A rare miss for me from Barreled Souls
