Sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled on 7/19/2022. Been in my cellar for 1.5 years.
The beer pours a deep dark mahogany with some ruby highlights. Very little light passes through the glass.
A creamy beige head of 1.5 cm foams up and rests on the surface of my glass. remains as a pretty deep surface covering throughout the sampling. Very good head retention for such a high ABV!
Aroma is dark malt and very rich bourbon notes. Some brown sugar and vanilla too, with definite fusol booze notes too. No hop character that I can detect. Smells like a boozy barleywine to me!
First sip reveals a medium body with smooth texture. Beer is a little thinner than I thought with no syrupy feel that big barleywines often have. Carbonation is mild and soft and this beer drinks pretty easy for a big brew.
Flavor is bold and malty with brown sugar, vanilla, some dark fruit and a sort of earthy cinnamon note. Of course a good amount of bourbon kicks in too. Again no hop notes and the beer definitely tends to be a little sweeter, but not candy like at all.
I also dont get any warming on the swallow. This is an enjoyable big beer that could be very dangerous if I didnt know it was 18% Id drink it much faster than I will. Nice barrel aged big beer!
