On tap at Barreled Souls Brewing Company in Saco, ME.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small head, and no lacing.

This smells like tobacco, licorice, light smoke, dark chocolate, brown sugar, oak, and coffee.

This has a gnarly barrel character to it – very oaky, a bit smoky, lots of brown sugar, some vanilla, and an herbal tobacco and licorice sort of bitterness. The base beer is strong enough to hang with the extended barrel aging, though. There’s lots of dark fudgy chocolate, and some coffee notes as well.

This is medium bodied, a touch boozy, but not anything crazy – although I am fairly immune to boozy stouts at this point.

It was wonderful to find this excellent beer on the member tap at Barreled Souls – it was a densely packed barrel treat.

Sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle poured into my snifter. Beer was bottled on 8/24/2022 and I picked it up at the brewery in October 2022. Bottle has been in my cellar since then.
The beer pours a dark black coffee color, with no light passing through my glass. A small , dense tan head of .5 cm foams up and fades quickly to a thin edge layer.
Aroma is more mild than I had expected for the beer. I do get some roasted malt notes and dark chocolate bar, with some bourbon notes and also hints of molasses and brown sugar. But none of these scents are robust. The ABV is hidden with no fusol or peppery notes. No hops here either.
First sip reveals a medium body and slightly sticky texture. I do get some coating on my palate and also a good covering on my lips with each sip. This all seems fitting for a big BA stout.
Flavor is similar to the nose but here is more robust. Brown sugar and molassess with a big hit of bourbon and some sweet vanilla. A little dark chocolate in the background. Never any hop presence and the ABV is here with a big dose of warming on the finish. This warmth covers my throat and gut on each swallow. Feels like a big beer and makes me sip this one.
The aroma was a bit disappointing, but otherwise this is a tasty bourbon barrel aged stout. glad to have tried this one!
