This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small head, and not much lacing.
This smells like rich dark chocolate, spicy bourbon, caramel, caramelized banana, and some pleasant charred nuttiness.
Barreled Souls is generally best at straight up barrel aged stouts and barleywines, but this example of a pastry stout was also done quite well by them, maybe the best pastry stout I’ve had from them, except for maybe DB Stay Puft. This is unbelievably chocolatey, and very barrel forward for how much stuff was added to it. The banana adds some texture, without a lot of extra sweetness, with a sort of caramelized banana sort of feel. This is nicely nutty and caramelly, with a spicy warming spirit hit on the back end.
This is medium bodied, not super syrupy or thick, but pretty creamy, with a really nice drinkability for the style.
This is everything you want out of this big old silly stout style.
