Sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle poured into my snifter. Beer was bottled on 11/28/2023, was held at the brewery for me where I picked it up on August. In my cellar since. Bottle is # 674/680.
The beer pours a light chestnut hue and carries some red wine and ruby highlights when its sitting in my glass. A pretty dark color with only some light passing through the glass. A spongey soapy khaki colored head of almost 3.5cm foams up on the pour and I cant get the whole bottle in the glass. This foam slowly fades to a sturdy surface covering. I get dense tight lattice when I swirl the glass or take a sip.
Aroma is some light malt and a bit of tart fruit note but also a little phenolic note too. Not a great start on this beer. No vanilla character on this nose. worried about the status of the beer.
First sip reveals a light to medium body with very fine and tingly carbonation. There is a bit of a slick coating to my palate with each sip.
Flavor is better than the nose. I get toffee and some light fruit here, with maybe a little sweet vanilla, but that is buried. The finish is a bit of fusol booze and some tartness but also some plastic note that is fairly unpleasant.
THERE IS AN INFECTION in this bottle. Ive added to this beer to the BA DB and will leave it as a warning. Looking at Untappd, several users mention sour and more of a wild ale than a barleywine. IF you have this bottle, it is probably not gonna be good. PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT over.
