Im sampling this cellar temp 500 ml bottle and pouring into my stemless tulip. Beer was picked up at the brewery in August and has been in my cellar since purchase.
The beer pours a dark cola brown and rests as a black coffee in my glass. A dense spongey tan head foams up several CMs in the glass and barely crests the lip of the glass , but does not overflow. This foam recedes slowly leaving only scattered lattice on my glass. I do get more lattice on swirls and sips.
Aroma is roasted malts, dark chocolate, a good bit of maple syrup and lightly sweetened coffee. No hint of the ABV on the nose and hop character is absent as well.
First sip reveals a medium body with very fine and tingly carbonation. Texture is pretty smooth for a bigger beer.
Flavor is what the nose advertises and is malt driven. I get some roasted malt and chocolate fudge mixing with maple syrup and definitely some coffee with a bit of sweetener. The maple syrup lingers a bit after each sip. This is definitely on the sweeter side of the spectrum of beers. No hint of the ABV and the hops are absent.
This is pretty much what you should expect from a coffee imperial stout with maple syrup. It is definitely sweet, so if that isnt your thing, this one may be a pass for you. Im enjoying sipping on it while i play some chess.
