ALEHouse (Riga, Latvia) "Prima Donna Belgian Style Saison." Brewed 05 DEC 2012. Expectations are high. 33cl brown glass bottle with appealing label art and unbranded metal pry-off pressure cap acquired at the ALEhouse for 2.00 euro. Reviewed from notes taken July 2014. 4.50% ABV. Served into a St. Idesbald stem-goblet.

Served at fridge temp and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Carefully side-poured by the bartender.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: 2 finger wide head of off-white colour. Gorgeously creamy and fantastically thick, with a saliva-inducing perfect soft even consistency and supple complexion. Thick lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Retention is excellent - about 15 minutes.

BODY: Hazy vibrant orange with plainly visible floating yeast particulate. This beer is alive. Translucent but nontransparent.

Overall, it's a damn fine looking saison. I can't wait to try it.

AROMA: Healthy Belgian style yeast, white pepper, Belgian pale malts, biscuity yeast notes, a kiss of marvelous brettanomyces funkiness, subtle spicing, clove, allspice, and biscuit malt.

The spicing could be more diverse and subtle, and the brettanomyces could be more interesting, but overall this is pretty spot-on for the style and has some nice aromatics. I'm excited to try it, but I'm not expecting a lot of intricacy based on the aroma - at least not relative to the best beers in the style.

TASTE: Subtle banana, heavy biscuity yeast notes, a kiss of brettanomyces. Belgian pale malts comprise the core of the beer. Clove. Healthy Belgian yeast. Some allspice. White peppery notes.

It's nice for the style, but isn't particularly intricate or complex, at least not compared to world-class saisons like Fantome and Dupont. Good depth and duration of flavour.

It's well-balanced and built, but not quite gestalt. Very cohesive, with good amplitude of flavour. The individual notes are nicely subtle, but don't add up to a world-class flavour profile. Still, I do quite like it.

No alcohol, off-notes, or hop notes come through.

TEXTURE: Smooth, soft, of medium thickness, and well-carbonated. It's slightly dry, which works well for it and fits in with its rustic Belgian vibe. Medium-bodied. Not too hefty or weighty on the palate.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, harsh, astringent, or rough on the palate.

Nice overall presence on the palate. This texture is well-tailored to the taste.

OVERALL: It's a nice saison for its 2.00 euro pricetag, and makes me very curious to try ALEhouse's other brews. I'd easily have it again, and would love to see how it develops with futher age. Well worth trying at its steal of a pricetag. It's nice to see a Latvian brewery doing Belgian saisons right.
