on the surface a seemingly pedestrian beer, simple black lager, but i was impressed with the execution overall and its obvious german authenticity, some good attention to detail on display here, which was true of many of the beers we enjoyed while visiting on their anniversary, their ninth i think, congrats! this is black in low light, shows some reddish edges outside on their comfortable side patio. smells sweeter than it tastes, caramel to my nostrils, roast to my tongue, coffee and cocoa and german lager yeast to both, not overly dynamic but it moves a little from earthy to sweet and then to bitter at the end, and the proportions and depth are great without this being too intense or heavy to drink on, a session type dark brew that should satisfy lovers of roasted grain across the board. i like the mineral foundation under this, the apparently professional lagering aspect, and the way its only off dry, leaving the best parts of the malt profile to linger just a little. a hint of smoke but nothing burnt, a deep earthiness without weight, and a graham cracker thing in the center. highly drinkable four season lager thats german enough to be obvious as a schwarzbier, well done.
