Pours a cloudy, deep mahogany coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of grainy, toasted, slightly caramelly malt and earthy, herbal hops, as well as light, spicy accents. Taste follows the nose, with a good balance of grainy, toasted, slightly caramelly malt and earthy, herbal hops, as well as some pumpernickel bread and hints of spicy accents. Finishes with a light/medium bitterness and some toasted malt, earthy hops and spicy accents lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.
This doesn't really have very much in common with a Pumpernickel Porter at all, but it does make for a rather nice Rye Amber Ale in my opinion. While it sorely misses the roasted malts and chocolate/coffee accents that I expect of a Porter, as well as a rich, bready Pumpernickel presence, it does have a rather nice balance of grainy, slightly toasted and caramelly malt and earthy, herbal hops going for it, as well as sweetness and bitterness, with a distinct, spicy rye character as well. So yeah, if you're going into this expecting a Porter you will be sorely disappointed, especially since the body and mouthfeel is somewhat light here as well, but it does make for a rather nice Amber Ale, so the name is rather poorly chosen here, unfortunately. I've decided to rate this as an Amber Ale, but keep in mind that it's a terrible Porter.

Bottle purchased at Craft Beer Store in Hamburg. I love the premise of a pumpernickel porter - can't wait to try it.
A: ~2cm off-white cap. Cola-redolent brown-black body. Nontransparent.
Looks average for a porter. No unique or special characteristics. More of a robust ink-black and more of a dark tan head would liven it up.
Sm: Faint bread. Pumpernickel, sure. Dark malts.
Quite a muted, reticent aroma.
T: Matches the aroma. Not as pumpernickel-forward as one would hope for given the premise. Some kvass-esque cola notes appear, diluting the dark malt backbone. It's bready but in a generic way - coming off tasting like a mediocre tmavy at best...or a poorly executed schwarzbier at worst.
Mf: Smooth, wet, thin, weak, medium-bodied, unrefreshing.
O: A forgettable brew with a great premise. The execution just isn't there. Shame...I was hoping for a really interesting beer with unique pumpernickel notes. What I got was an unremarkable form of liquid bread. It is drinkable, though.
