355 mL can from the LCBO; coded M169 (which I think translates to Dec 16 2019) and served slightly chilled. I also consumed a few cans of this over the holidays, giving me more time than usual to consider its strengths and weaknesses.

Pours a muddy, translucent pinkish-salmon colour, topped with one cm of loose, bubbly white head that vanishes almost as quickly as it was formed. A thin, unremarkable collar and a few splotches of lace are its only remnants; not what I'd call a looker, but its rosy hue does give it some character. Hints of mango, pineapple and orange come through on the nose, alongside a sweetened hibiscus tea-like note - reasonably appealing, and certainly along the lines of what I'd expect from a "hibiscus pale ale".

A serviceable pale ale - the hibiscus is probably its most distinguishing aspect, imparting floral, fruit punch & herbal tea notes to a brew that features a gritty, grainy pale malt backbone as well as some fruity hop flavours. Orange and mango come to mind, with more of a floral, resiny bitterness reverberating through the finish and into an aftertaste of lightly sweetened hibiscus tea. Light-medium in body, with middling carbonation levels that provide a decent bite, resulting in a relatively crisp pale ale that is just as refreshing as a glass of hibiscus iced tea.

Final Grade: 3.65, a B grade. Longslice's Aloha Friday HPA is a decent beer from a brewery that has not made a lot of noise lately. As far as pale ales go, there's nothing particularly novel here; the Azacca hops are forced to share the limelight with the hibiscus, which is the most dominant aspect of its flavour profile. If you like hibiscus in your beer, this is more than likely a safe pick-up - I'm sure I'll return to it again at some point, though I wouldn't go out of my way to do so.

355 ml can served cold into a pint glass. LCBO purchase for $2.65 CDN.

Appearance - Hazy and turbid rust/ salmon blend and a small half finger of foam on top.

Smell - Some citrus aromas with perfumey hibiscus. Some other floral elements and a subtle undercurrent of sweaty gym socks.

Taste - Lightly fruity with hibisicus and a big crackery grain malt in behind. Not a ton of complexity but reasonably tasty and execution isn't bad.

Mouthfeel - Slightly spritzy, medium bodied, well carbonated, leaning towards gassy and a touch of dryness to close.

Overall - A decent if un spectacular hibiscus pale ale that had enough body and enough flavor to quench the spot. This probably translates slightly better with warmer weather (fall is arriving in full force) as I could see it as an enjoyable patio or deck beer in late summer with the fruity and flowery highlights. Worth a try though.
