Served on-tap at the brewery itself in a 10 ounce glass. On to the beer:

This is one dark brown ale. Very dark brown and nearly black colored, topped with okay head and retention. I keep asking this question throughout my glass, is it a brown ale or brown porter? It has a smoky aroma with graham cracker and spent grain. It certainly tastes more like a porter. To go with the vague smokiness, notes of marshmallow, charcoal (in a good way) and the linger of bittering hops in the aftertaste. I keep asking questions, but I can answer one with certainly; this is a solid beer.

On tap at the brewery – San Clemente, CA
From the sampler – 08/24/2014

A: Pours a dark walnut brown body with some faint light breaking through the edges giving off a reddish glow. Thin capper of ivory cream settles to a crown with some modest amounts of stick left on the glass.

S: Smells of coffee malt and nutty toasted grains with a faint chocolate accent. Has an overall toffee sweetness to it which is nice along with some earthy hop presence. Very nice, clean, and fairly roasty for a brown.

T: Chocolate malt intensifies in the flavor giving that first impression followed by coffee candy and some nutty hazelnut. Comes together like Nutella which is quite tasty. Has a light toffee sweetness to it and this is a touch more darker in roast than I was anticipating. Lightly bittered with some pine and earthy hop notes. Finishes dry and crisp with no alcohol making an appearance. More coffee in the after taste.

M: The mouth feel is light to moderate and fairly creamy on the palate. There is a moderate amount of perceived bitterness with a nice drying finish. Overall falls somewhere between watered down and creamy.

D: A much darker take on the American Brown style this one blurs the lines of a Porter offering up some roasty flavors of coffee and chocolate. This was their darkest ale available and it works pretty nicely in that it is well balanced and very drinkable without being to heavy or filling.
