BBP prides itself on being on the cutting edge of the beer scene in Brussels. Good. But if you go on their website and read what they really are about, they can impact Belgium and, if we are lucky, all of craft brewing. BBP claims their biggest achievement is they were certified as B Corporation; which means they are Good Guys and work toward a more equitable and sustainable economy. That elevates brewing to some pretty big industries. But doing so requires experimentation.
But not every experiment BBP does is going to add to what the masters already do.
So it goes with Tripel Bertha.
As first, I didn't get the joke: I thought this was a real tripel when I bought it. Of course, it's a strong hefe. In this case, the strong is well concealed (a skill). But Bertha is particularly not in the Bavarian tradition in that her Smell and Taste are bland. The masters make a tropical fruit punch of banana, other tree fruits and spices. Bertha is Big, but not Bavarian. But Bertha, however, is soft; so there is lots of wheat in the mix. My advice, maybe find a better yeast. Do that and I will keep trying your beer.
