Oliphant Gobias Imperial Coffee Stout, 8% ABV. Pours moderately thick and very deep brown with a 1.5 finger beige head that left no lacing. Aroma is roasty malt and strong coffee. Taste is mostly coffee and roast malt, no sweetness, slightly bitter. Great mouthfeel, overall excellent. A real nice coffee stout that doesn't overdo the bitterness.

Pours a mahogany color with a tan head. Smell is chocolate, roasted malts and coffee. Taste has a nice roasted coffee start with roasted chocolate malts . Mouth feel has some espresso bitterness its offset a little from the malts , a nice black ale.

My first beer review from this brewery. I poured into a nonic, and the temperature was around 46 degrees. The pour created a frothy and airy tan head with above-average retention. The somewhat slow dissipation left chunks of lacing on the glass. The color charts around SRM 24, dark brown with used oily highlights. The appearance is standard for this style of beer.
The aromas are dark roasted coffee, dark roasted malts, toffee, raisins, a hint of floral, leather, and earthiness.
I taste robust dark coffee, dark roasted malts, molasses, leather, floral esters, earthiness, and tobacco.
The mouthfeel is thick and creamy.
The body is heavy, has low carbonation, and has a long-lasting finish.
This beer is delightful; the coffee flavors are pronounced and not bitter. The stout is thick but not overbearing. Well-made beer and a delight to drink.

Looks exactly like cola coming out of the can, but then once settled into the glass it takes on a darker tone. Beautiful, dense beige colored head. Really nice head retention and lacing.
I couldn't pick up the aroma from a foot or so away, but once I smelled it up close it was all coffee and dark roasted malts.
Taste very much follows the nose, and is all coffee and roasted malts. No discernable sweetness or hoppy bitterness. What bitterness exists seems to stem from the coffee. It's not the most complex beer, but those dominant flavors do work well together and make this a tasty beer. Body is light, with not a ton of carbonation.

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color - only faint traces of dark red are visible near the corners of the glass. It poured with a quarter finger high light tan head that left a narrow collar around the edge and some specks of bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of coffee beans are present in the nose.
T: The taste is dominated by flavors of cold brew coffee and has underlying hints of malty sweetness. The coffee contributes a slight amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a bit smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is like an adult version of cold brew coffee - it's all about the coffee from start to finish.

2016 notes:
Here's a growler from my last visit to Oliphant back in December. I've been sitting on it, and that occasion has passed, and it's time to drink it up, the coffee black ale named for the conjoining of David Cross and Will Arnett. Let's open it up and drink it.
gobias. black ale brewed with coffee, 8.5% alc./vol. Oliphant Brewing, Somerset, WI.
Dark brown coloring, some reddish tints showing through the edges, with a creamy tan head up on top, lasting and leaving lace.
Aroma: creamy and malty, cocoa-y, soft and toffee-y....And then comes the coffee, nice and rich and roast and spicy and lovely....I love it.
Time to drink it: Coffee kicks it off right away, dripping with it, thick and sticky with the coffee and dark malts. Full-bodied. Satisfying. All the right parts are at play in this, just enough of everything. Just enough hops, tons of malt, plenty of coffee. I'm getting it all here, and I love it. I'll be back for more, definitely. They'll certainly make more, as they've told me it's one of their most popular beers.

Pours pitch black with a minimal slightly off white head. The nose is a combination of coffee with hints of chocolate.
Taste is quite rich with coffee, with a hint of chocolate.
Thick, rich, full body.
One of my favorite beers here, and it's been way too long since I had it.

Purchased a crowler of this on 4/3/2018. Website notes for the beer are:
"my gloves smell like burrito, and my mouth tastes like cheese. i am a dream within a dream, and i'm alright. fetch me my yogurt spoon, there's only one way to get ourselves out of this mess. start diggin'. we are tubes afterall.
black ale with lots-o-coffee. 8% abv"
Crowler poured into glass. No fill date information found on can or label.
Black colored body, with just the tiniest of very dark brown highlights against the light. Two finger light tan head settles to cap and ring. Some strings of lacing.
Aroma is dominated by dark roast coffee, along with dark roast malts. Has a whiff of grain smell (like walking into a local grain elevator), very faint.
Taste also has the dark roast/espresso coffee, but then opens into a very fudgy, dark chocolate area. Has hints of vanilla and dark fruit. Not too sweet, and not overly bitter. There are some hops present also, because this is labeled as a 'black ale'.
Medium, smooth, and slightly creamy mouth feel. More toward the dry side of finish. Good carbonation support.
Excellent choice of beer for those who like dark beer with a heavy dark coffee influence. The initial whiff of aroma may lead one to think this will be unbalanced and just a strong coffee beer, but the taste opens up to provide more layers of flavors. Overall this is a strong expressive beer.

righteous coffee stout far better than its ratings. this beer has all the fundamentals of a great stout, but the coffee element is unique, and it makes this beer special. my first beer from these guys. the coffee aroma is strong and roasty, but low acid and cold brew feeling to me, true to the essence of the coffee for sure, and its a quality bean and brew no doubt. in the flavor, the coffee seems to bring out both the roasted element in the dark grain as well as its betterness, but also a really cool chocolate flavor you find in certain high quality espresso. lots of cocoa and desserty elements, but this beer isnt very sweet, so its kind of a cool back and forth, but the way the coffee tastes here is next level, not like in other stouts, and i think part of it is great coffee, but part of it also is a base stout built for it. very impressive. smooth body, creamy feel, very very coffee driven, dry, distinct, and fancy feeling. have not heard much about these guys so far, but what a sexy stout this is, some of the best i have had in its category... highly keen for more of their stuff now...

Pours a dark brown color with khaki colored head. Coffee, roasted malts, toffee, and some cocoa on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium to full bodied, but somewhat thin on the pour for a stout. Finishes with plenty of coffee and roast.
