Had on tap at The Milwaukee Burger Company. Mild smokey coffee taste, very little foam lacing, head doesn't last long. Kind of a delayed effect after taste...bitter/sour. Not my thing.

More label art that I don't get. It's based on something, but what it is I don't know. It has something to do with elevators and bellboys, but beyond that I'm mystified.

Dark brown color, slim brown head. Looking the part.

In the nose: roasted malt takes the charge, with notes of coffee and cocoa behind. Rich, earthy, lovely. Note perfect.

In the mouth: Full bodied, full presence on the palate. More coffee than chocolate, at least at first. Dark malts aplenty. Moderate hop bitterness. Smooth, easy-drinking. Just about a just right porter, in all respects.

Pours pitch black,. 1 finger brown head. Retention is good, but no lacing on the glass.
The nose is not too strong. Some chocolate. Some smoked elements to it. Maybe just a hint of coffee.
Taste - Roasted, malty, chocolate. Hint of vanilla. Definite char/ smoke eliminate to this beer, though it isn't a smoke beer.
The body is quite good. The char feeling lingers.
I've had this beer several times before this review, and it's a solid beer from Oliphant. They just keep hitting it out of the park.

12oz can courtesy of Victory_Sabre1973. No obvious freshness date. I initially thought it was not in the BA database because it's spelled "Hunkboy" (I.e., all one word) on the can, but I looked up Oliphant Brewing and found it that way.

Poured a color and viscosity normally associated with motor oil. Thin, mocha colored head that dropped swiftly for a 6% abv beer. Only way to get any lace was by swirling the crap out odnthe glass.

Roasty as fuck. I honestly thought this was brewed with coffee. I happen to be a coffee beer aficionado, so the big, coffee-like nose was not a problem for me. If you're not a coffee fan, it's possible it might be off-putting. As it warmed, some sweeter, chocolatey notes emerged as well.

The coffee-like dark malt bitterness and richness is what first hits the tastebuds as well. Midway through, things get a bit more sweet and chocolatey, before finishing on a dry and slightly acidic note.

Body is at the thinner end of medium, with a somewhat thin, yet sticky mouthfeel.

A very nice robust porter that works well as a dessert after a lunchtime visit to a local pizza place following work. I don't think I've heard of Oliphant before now, but I'll happily try anything else of theirs should they come my way. Thanks, James!

This beer pours a classic dark brown with a solid mocha head. The aroma features notes of fresh roast coffee, chocolate, browned toast, raisin, and a hint of burn orange. The flavor starts slightly sweet, with notes of milk chocolate, marshmallow, and mocha, then a pinch of coffee acidity hits you, mellowing to a slightly date and raisin finish with some darker chocolate. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with tame carbonation and a slightly sticky finish. Overall this is a really nice porter that balances sweetness with acidity, and richness with roast.

Poured from 12oz can into glass. No canning date information found.
Dark brown colored body, with mahogany backlit highlights. Very little head but the beer surface is active with rising bubbles. Each sip leaves behind some oily sheen of lacing.
Aroma of dark roasted malts, which express coffee and char.
Taste follows with dark/char roasted malts, with a little smoke flavor, and lots of dark coffee. This beer also has some sweet expression, similar to toffee and molasses.
Thin mouth feel. Okay carbonation.
Good, solid porter with a full expression of smells and flavors.

mouth is thin with decent carbonation.

Poured into a tall shaker glass (string of bad luck- broke a couple of beer glasses). Nice tan head that lingered. Black as can be. Smell of char toasted malts, coffee like espresso. Smoky smell. Taste follows the nose. Smoky, char coffee in a pleasant "robust" way. Mouth feel thin as a porter should be. Smoky espresso taste lingers. Nice lacing on the glass. Oliphant is making some really interesting beers. I really enjoy this one. I am a fan of stouts and porters. I would buy again. Clerk at store remarked " A lot of people are buying this beer (Oliphant), I'll have to try one." Support your local brewers. Good stuff.
