I've tried a lot of beers but I've never had an American dark wheat beer. It's a clean easy drinker. Caramel notes for sure.. like a dunkeweizen. Pours black with an amber rim, hardly any lacing and nicely carbonated. Not every dark beer needs to be rich and feel like you're drinking a liquified French silk pie. Nice break from the IPAs.

From a 16oz can purchased at the brewery.
This is a very dark pouring beer. Not quite pitch black, but close to it. I do see faint hints of amber at the edge of the glass when I hold it to the light. The head is not too thick at about 1 finger. Not too long lasting and the head dissipates to a ring around the glass with no lacing on the glass.
The aroma is malty, and has notes of licorice in it.
Taste - There's a ton of flavor packed into this beer. I do get a delicious roasted malt flavor. There's a bit of caramel going on in this beer, and the caramel lasts with the roasted flavor. Slightly nutty in flavor also. Not getting the licorice that I was getting in the aroma. Slight and faint bitterness on the back ties it all together.
The body isn't bad at all. Smooth feeling.
Damn tasty beer overall.

I bought a can of this beer off the single shelf from a beer store located in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. The beer poured an opaque dark with thin khaki ring head that is not leaving any lace. The scent had subtle roast notes and hints od anise. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with dark roast malt base and subtle bittering hop presence. The mouthfeel was medium in body and had good carbonation. Overall it is a good beer.

Appearance: Pours a nearly completely black, dark color with a moderate to strong light tan head. SRM of 23. (4.00)
Aroma: Strong aromas of dark grains, cocoa powder, light coffee roast. (4.00)
Flavor: Moderate flavors of dark grains, lightly bitter coffee roast. Slightly sour bitterness off the end (3.75)
Feel: Medium-bodied, strong carbonation. Finishes dry and clean, lightly lingering bitterness. (4.00)
Compared to 3 Sheeps Lightweight 2/2023: Pours similar, milder, lighter head. Stronger aromas. More grains, coffee roast. Less smooth bittersweet chocolate. Less flavor overall. Winner: 3 Sheeps
Compared to Brewing Projekt Dusk Beast 2/2023: Pours similar, larger, darker head. Stronger aromas. More chocolate, roasted black grains. Less grains and yeast on the aromas. Identical flavors and mouthfeel.
Compared to Badger State SKI-BRW 3/2023: Pours darker, stronger head. Stronger aromas. More dusty cocoa and roastedness. Less dark grains, earthy caramel and floral notes. More roasted and sour.
3/2023: Pours darker. Stronger aromas. More dark and black roastedness. Less brown bread, caramel. Drier and cleaner. 3/2024: Pours darker, stronger aromas. Mor black malt and dark roast. Less brown bread and earthy. Drier and cleaner.
Compared to Half Acre Ridge Tree 3/25: Pours darker, stronger aromas. Less dry grains and roast. More sweet bittersweet chocolate. Sweeter.
Overall: A decent dark American Wheat beer. Not "Wisconsin Dark beer", so not sure to list it as a German Schwarz, Czech Dark, Euro Dark, or American Dark wheat. Anyways it has dark grains, mild roast. Nice and clean mouthfeel. Could use a bit more flavor, but otherwise pretty good. Nice combo from Oliphant and The Ale Jail. I've enjoyed some of the other Ale Jails combo pilsners. This one is decent, but a great style. (Rating: 3.90)
