Pitch black pouring beer. Nothing shines through even when held up to the light. There's a nice thick 2 finger brown head. The head is fairly frothy looking with smaller bubbles. I am totally surprised by the retention for such a heavy hitter. When the head does dissipate, there's actually some great lacing on the glass.
The nose is not too strong, which surprises me a bit. I am getting some milk chocolate in the aroma. I also get some licorice in the mix. I did let this beer warm up a bit before smelling. I don't know if the aroma will get stronger as it gets warmer.
Taste - Waves of chocolate malts hit me. The chocolate starts off more dark, bitter, roasted chocolate. There's also a coffee vibe that shows up at this point. The dark chocolate stays a bit, but is replaced by a sweeter milk chocolate flavor. Some licorice also comes into pay at this point. The milk chocolate flavor fades, and it finishes up with the bitter dark chocolate.
This is a big boy to be sure. Very thick and full body. There's almost no alcohol burn from this beer. Maybe just a faint hint on the back. This hint reminds you to take your time with this beer.
This is a delicious heavy hitter from Oliphant. I am happy with it, and a pleasure to drink.
