In 1851 the 8 hussar garrison besieged the current Rheder brewery. This tasty special beer is brewed according to old traditional recipes of the long-time brewery owner Adolf Freiherr Spiegel von und zu Peckelsheim, Rittmeister in the 1st Westphalian Hussar Regiment. Its palatable, full-bodied taste is harmoniously combined with a slight bitterness of pure aroma hops.

I think this was part of an Advent beer pack from Costco a little over a year ago. Don't remember anything specific about this beer and didn't give it a great rating.

day 15 of the beer advent calendar. this one poured from a 500mL can into a new glarus dimpled mug. pours dark gold (almost a very light amber) with two fingers of slightly dirty white foam head. loving the nose on this one. slightly boozey / ethanol type aromas with bready malts and earthy hops. the yeast and malts are at the forefront though. as it warms there are some floral qualities to it as well. taste mostly follows. with a slightly earthy almost oaky finish. medium-full mouthfeel. nice carbonation to it. solid festbier.

Nice malty beer. Nothing special but very easy to drink.

Very rich honey hue to the beer itself.
Smell is okay. Bready, but somewhat metallic to my nose.
Head foams a lot on the pour, but settles really quickly.
Taste is really pleasant and refreshing without an extensive length on the tongue. Some sips make me think of metal still, but unsure if that's the smell influencing me or not
I'd drink this again, but wouldn't go out of my way for it.

My second from Rheder, both from Kalea's Advent Calendar courtesy of Costco. The first was 2019 and in 4 years, Rheder seems not have changed that much. Still an impressively traditional German estate brewery... whose website I still can't find the English button; limiting the nice things I can say about them. Not lots of Overall Hugs for all that.
But with Kalea opening up the U.S. market (albeit once a year), maybe that's change enough. And I enjoyed this Festbier more than pils (which I largely panned.) While Trunk Looks and Smells average among Festbiers at harvest time, it does have a nice balanced Taste that stays malty with just enough hops for a lingering semi-dry finish. Medium-mouthed with good bubbles, Trunk washed down well an average lunch. Prost!

Schlossbrauerei Rheder "Husaren-Trunk"
50 cl can coded "EXP 2024/03 15:28 2806MU". Sampled on 15 NOV 2023
Notes via stream of consciousness: A rough pour has brought up a thumb's width of slightly off-white foam atop a moderately hazy, deep golden/amber colored body. The aroma expresses lightly toasted bread alongside softly herbal and fruity hops. The flavor follows with an almost honey-like note to the malt. The sweetish and lightly toasted bread character remains, and the hops are herbal and a touch spicy. It has a suggestion of caramel as well, and a delicate apple-like fruitiness. The malt has a depth to it that keeps my attention, and then a firm bitterness comes forth leading it to a dry finish with herbal and spicy hop notes lingering. The head has held up well and there are plenty of thins streaks and spots of lace on the glass that bring to mind a cloudy night sky above craggy trees. In the mouth it;s medium-full in body and crisp with a fine-bubbled, seemingly natural carbonation. This is an interesting, richer than usual beer with a lot of flavor to it but not a lot of alcohol at just 5.3% ABV.

The first taste felt a little rough, but it mellowed out as I tasted more. Overall, it's a decent beer, not bad, but not especially outstanding on the good side either.

From the 16 oz can in a snifter. This solid little brew pours a clear
light amber with a nice head of white foam that settles to a thick ring, thin light
layer and sports some light lacing. Nose of caramel malts, light grains, and spicy bittering
hops. Flavors follow on point with light caramel and spicy herbal bittering hops with
subtle citrus notes. Mouthfeel is light, smooth, crisp, medium light carbonation that
has nice lift, and a clean lightly bitter hop finish.
Overall, a solid little fest
