Straight pour from a 32oz twist-off growler to a 16oz, nucleated “can” glass (my Fiddlehead pint, in case you’re curious). This was purchased two days ago, refrigerated immediately after purchase, and opened for the first time this evening—ideal conditions were retained.

Appearance (3.75): Nearly crystal-clear, rich golden beer fills the glass, capped by two solid fingers of tight, white foam that rise quickly off of the pour. The head dies down at a moderate rate, leaving a few modest collars and spotty suds around the edge of the glass.

Smell (4.0): Classic BPA notes: pear, apple juice, a little plum flesh and other orchard fruits mingle with some typical spice notes including coriander, white pepper, and a touch of basil. A little light brown sugar, honeyed biscuits, and toasted multi-grain bread composing the malt body. All in all, this fleshes out all of the style notes pleasantly and completely—it doesn’t go beyond the style, but it plays the part very, very well.

Taste (4.0): The palate follows the direction of the nose, leaning more heavily on the orchard fruits and leaving the spice notes for the tail end of the drink: pear juice, white grape skins, and tangy apple flesh, followed by more of the peppery component hinted at by the nose than garden herbs, but definitely a bit of coriander, too. Floral, grassy hops flush out the spice in the finish, leaving a brassy, lightly herbal and surprisingly somewhat citrusy bitterness in its place—the citrus is a nice touch, actually, complementing the orchard fruits. The malt’s main function seems to be to add some sweetness and heft to the body, in order to fill out the fruity esters created by the yeast.

Mouthfeel (4.25): Just barely on the light-side of medium-weight, this beer smoothly flows over your tongue and leaves a nice, evenly-distributed coating of velvety, lightly effervescent carbonation that foams up modestly and smoothly on the wash out.

Overall (3.75): This is a very, very solid Belgian Pale Ale that lives up to the style but doesn’t deliver any new tricks. It’s not a funky, hoppy, or exotic BPA by any means—just a standard-bearer. But it does deliver on its promises and presents a fulfilling, approachable, easy to drink rendition of the style that’s satisfying enough that you’ll gladly come back to it. Definitely worth trying when you visit First Mag or see it on draft around town!

More of a hefe than a Belgian style, but a very nice on at that. Could drink this all summer.

Note: The brewery has now named this "Cool Pond Belgian Blonde", and this rating should be merged under that heading.
