WOW. This beer obviously diverges from a traditional berliner with the addition of ugly fruit (apparently thats actually its name), but it is so well done. The base beer is an outstanding berliner and the ugly fruit adds a nice orange-grapefruit tartness to the puckering sourness. Very refreshing - I could down this by the can on a hot summer day. Another home run from J. Wakefield.

delicious berliner right here, jazzed up with ugli fruit, which i am not real familiar with, but the flavors here are incredible. a soft cloudy pale wheat looking base with a short white head. aroma of fresh sliced lemon, kiwi fruit, and bright clean acidity that seems as likely to have come from fruit as it is to have come from a bacterial souring process, very natural and zippy. fresh grapefruit zest is the first thing i taste, which has to be the fruit, and a sourness closer to a lemon than a grapefruit or orange. plenty of raw wheat character in here, and some body from it too, this is not your classic watery juvenile berliner, much more substantial, layered, and convincing. they got the souring part right on this, as was also evidenced by other berliner styles they had going in here, but the tart citrus really takes it to the next level. a bit sour to crush a ton of, but also rather refreshing, i could see this being a great half and half with their coconut hefeweizen. good carbonation to this, and even a floral hop component as it all winds down. unique and well made berliner, one of the better fruited ones i have had in a long time.
