Review #1875
The beer poured an ultra thick and viscous, absolute pitch black hue with no head whatsoever. In the glass, the liquid looked oily and completely still.
The aroma was amazingly rich and complex. Uber malty and appropriately sweet for the style. Coconut came through big time. Loads of fragrant vanilla as well. Dark fruit notes were also apparent. Big brown sugar presence too. The rum barrels definitely made their presence known. Hint of spice (cinnamon?). As the beer warmed, rich chocolate fudge notes appeared. Unfortunately, the coffee was undetectable.
The flavor profile was equally as impressive. Super malty and robust up front. Loads of coconut and brown sugar. Vanilla also came through strong. Sweet rummy notes appeared as the beer moved along the palate. Lots of dark fruit character. The cinnamon was detectable too. More rich maltiness on the back end. The beer finished a touch roasty with lingering rum/bourbon notes and just a hint of booze. Like the nose, however, the coffee seemed absent.
The mouthfeel was rich, syrupy and full bodied but nearly still. A super fine and subtle effervescence gave the liquid a lush creaminess on the palate.
Despite the fact that many breweries have really upped their pastry stout game in recent years, Hangover Cuvée definitely stands apart from the pack. Both the flavor and the aroma were super intense yet well rounded, the mouthfeel was ridiculously thick and the alcohol was shockingly well buried. Even with the coffee presence missing, this beer was exceptional.
